Rebels Drop A Pair At Arkansas

5/1/2010 | Softball

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. - Despite out-hitting the Razorbacks five-to-three, the Ole Miss offense couldn't push across any runs and fell 5-0 to Arkansas in game one of a double header on Saturday at Bogle Park. The Rebels also dropped the second game 9-0 in five innings to the Razorbacks.

The Razorbacks jumped on the scoreboard in the bottom of the first with a two-out, RBI double to right by designated player Miranda Dixon. Second baseman Courtney Breault followed Dixon with a two-run homer to left by that gave Arkansas a 3-0 lead after one.

Arkansas extended its lead to 5-0 in the fourth on a pinch-hit, RBI double to left by Emily Jones and an RBI fielder's choice from shortstop Brittany Griffiths.

Brittany Barnhill started for the Rebels and took the loss after giving up five runs on just three hits while striking out five in 3.1 innings of work. Lindsey Perry relieved Barnhill with one out in the fourth and pitched the final 2.2 innings. She did not allow a hit and struck out two batters.

Ole Miss looked to get its offense going in the seventh when catcher Amber Tramp led off the top of the frame with a single and was pinch run for by Amanda Hutcheson. Third baseman Cali Overbeck followed Tramp with a line-drive double into left center that gave the Rebels runners on second and third with nobody out. However, Ashley Dowdy popped out to short and Hutcheson was doubled up at third after straying too far off the bag. Courtnie Ghinaudo then grounded out to second to end the game.

The Rebels and the Razorbacks will conclude their three-game series tomorrow at 2 p.m. at Bogle Park.

Game Two

The Ole Miss bats couldn't come alive in game two against the Razorbacks, as the Rebels dropped the second game of the day 9-0 to Arkansas.

Designated player Miranda Dixon drove in Arkansas' first runs of the game with a two-run double to right center in the bottom of the first. Second baseman Courtney Breault followed with a RBI single to left center that plated Dixon and gave the Razorbacks a 3-0 lead after one.

Ole Miss threatened in the third when Rebel right fielder Alyssa McGovern and center fielder Alise Doubt both reached on singles to left that gave Ole Miss runners on first and second with one out. However, Arkansas starting pitcher Hope McLemore got Lauren Grill and Brittany Barnhill to both pop out to end the scoring threat.

Arkansas added two more runs in the third on an RBI triple to right by first baseman Layne McGuirt and a sac fly from Brittany Robinson. Sandra Smith added an RBI single in the fourth and Breault hit a three-run homer to left later in the inning that put the Razorbacks up by the final score of 9-0.

Lindsey Perry suffered the loss after starting and giving up three runs on three hits in just a third of an inning. Becky Nye entered in relief in the first and pitched the final 3.2 innings. She allowed six runs on six hits and struck out three.
