Rebel Track And Field Primes For SEC Championships

OXFORD, Miss. - With at least two SEC champions in each of the last three years, the Ole Miss track and field team looks for more of the same success this week when the Rebels travel to Knoxville, Tenn., to take part in the 2010 SEC Outdoor Championships from Tom Black Track at LaPorte Stadium.

Competition begins Thursday afternoon at 2:30 p.m. (CT) with the women's h eptathlon and concludes Sunday evening at 7:40 p.m. with the men's 4x400 meter relay final.

The men's team enters the week 13th in the nation in the latest U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association poll and feature eight athletes ranked amongst the top-30 in the nation.

Freshman jumper Ricky Robertson ranks first in the country in the high jump after setting a new school record with a height of 7-05.75 at the Florida Relays. Sophomore Brian Knight is third in the NCAA in the high jump with a top height of 7-04.50 turned in at the Florida Relays.

Junior sprinter Jonathan Juin stands 15th in the NCAA in the 100 meters with a top time of 10.28, while freshman Mike Granger is 22nd in the event with his top mark of 10.34. Juin also ranks 17th in the country in the 200 meters with a top time of 20.73.

In the 400 meter hurdles, junior Lee Ellis Moore is third in the nation with a top time of 49.52 set at the Ole Miss Invitational. Sophomore Carson Blanks is 19th in the country with his top mark of 50.87 he also recorded at the Ole Miss Invitational.

Distance runner Barnabas Kirui is ninth in the country in the 3000 meter steeplechase after recording a time of 8:43.72 earlier in the year at the LSU Alumni Gold Meet. His brother, Martin, Kirui, is ranked 12th in the NCAA in the event with his top time of 8:46.68 he posted en route to winning the individual title at the Drake Relays.

Junior Sofie Persson is 25th in the nation in the 400 meters with a top time of 53.41 and is one of four members of the women's team to be nationally ranked. Persson is also 23rd in the country in the 400 meter hurdles following her best mark of 58.33. In addition, Persson also runs the final leg for the 4x400 meter relay team that is ranked 17th in the NCAA with a top time of 3:34.60.

Sprinter LaJada Baldwin is ranked 18th in the nation in the 400 meters with a time of 52.98 and also runs the third leg of the 4x400 meter relay.

In field events, junior thrower Betty Williams is 16th in the NCAA in the shot put after turning in a top distance of 53-05.75 at the Florida Relays, while senior Davina Orieukwu is 24th in the country in the event with a top distance of 52-00.00 she posted at the LSU Alumni Gold Meet.
