Pomeranz Sets Ks Mark As Rebels Advance
5/26/2010 | Baseball
HOOVER, Ala. - Junior left-hander Drew Pomeranz set the Ole Miss career-strikeout mark, working 7.0 scoreless innings with seven strikeouts and a walk as he helped lead No. 21 Ole Miss (37-20) to a 3-0 win over No. 7 South Carolina (43-14) in the opening day of action at the Southeastern Conference Tournament.
Pomeranz (8-2) now holds 339 strikeouts for his career, passing previous record holder Lance Lynn with a strikeout in the first inning of Wednesday's game.
Brett Huber picked up his 11th save of the season as he worked the final 2.0 innings and held the Gamecocks to one hit with a walk and a strikeout. Huber is tied with Justin Huisman for second on the single-season save list at Ole Miss. He needs two more saves to tie Stephen Head's record of 13 saves set in 2003.
It was the first time South Carolina had been shut out in 154 games dating back to the 2008 season when the Georgia Bulldogs posted a 1-0 victory over the Gamecocks on April 5, 2008.
"It was a great college baseball game today," said Ole Miss head coach Mike Bianco. "It certainly shows why we're happy to have Drew Pomeranz on our team and not sitting in another dugout. I thought the difference today was we gave ourselves some chances, even though we didn't necessarily get the big hit and left runners in scoring position."
Nolan Belcher (3-1) suffered the loss for South Carolina as he worked 3.0 innings and allowed two runs on two hits with two walks and three strikeouts. Both runs came on a two-run shot to right field from Miles Hamblin in the third inning that put the Rebels on the board.
South Carolina would use five more pitchers on the day to try to hold the Rebel hitters, but Ole Miss would score again in the seventh inning.
Taylor Hashman extended the lead for the Rebels, driving in Matt Smith from third on a single to left field that put Ole Miss up 3-0. Smith singled before stealing second and moving to third on a single from Matt Snyder to set up the score on the two-out hit from Hashman.
Pomeranz then retired three of the next four Gamecock batters in the bottom half of the inning before turning the game over to Huber, who held South Carolina in check for the final two innings to preserve the Rebel win.
Ole Miss and South Carolina have faced-off three times in the SEC Tournament's history with the Rebels picking up shutout victories in both wins over the Gamecocks. Ole Miss won 2-0 in the 1999 SEC Tournament.
The Rebels will return to action on Thursday when Ole Miss will face seventh-seeded Alabama at 4:30 p.m. The Crimson Tide defeated second-seeded Auburn 7-1 in the first game of the day on Wednesday.
