Marcel Thiemann Becomes Rebels' 25th All-American

5/27/2010 | Men's Tennis

ATHENS, Ga. - Ole Miss sophomore Marcel Thiemann became the 25th All-American in the history of the men's tennis program, when he rallied to defeat Virginia's Jamere Jenkins in three sets Thursday to reach the third round of the NCAA Singles Championship.

Thiemann dropped the first set 6-3. He rallied to go up a break in the second. Jenkins broke back and the two went to a tiebreaker, which Thiemann won 7-5 to force the deciding set. In the final set, Thiemann broke in the eighth game and served out for 6-3 to move onto the round of 16 in his first ever NCAA singles appearance.

The All-SEC first team honoree is one of four remaining players in the draw from the SEC, and his next opponent is Kentucky's Eric Quigley. The two split their two previous meetings this year. Quigley won in straight sets in the regular season meeting, and then Thiemann defeated the Wildcat in straight sets to propel the Rebels to a 4-0 win over Kentucky in the quarterfinals of the SEC Tournament.

In the first round of doubles, Marcel and his brother, Chris Thiemann, lost a close three-set match to the Illinois team of Marek Czerwinski and Dennis Nevolo. Illinois won the first set 6-3, and then the Thiemann twins claimed the second 6-3. Illinois was able to hang on in the third to win 7-5.
