5/29/2010 | Men's Tennis

ATHENS, Ga. - Ole Miss men's tennis sophomore Marcel Thiemann ended a stellar year in the NCAA Quarterfinals, falling in three sets to Stanford's Bradley Klahn here Saturday at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex.

Thiemann jumped out to a commanding lead, winning the first set 6-1. Klahn, the 2009 ITA Rookie of the Year, picked it up in the second set as neither player could break the other. It went to a tiebreaker, which Klahn won 7-4 to extend the match. In the third set, Klahn was able to break early for a 2-1 lead. Thiemann broke back right away, but Klahn broke again and held to win it 6-4.

Thiemann ends the season at 27-14. He won five of his last six matches, including beating the nation's No. 6 ranked player twice in that span and the No. 12 player to reach the NCAA Quarterfinals.

The Lehrte, Germany native played No. 6 singles as a freshman in 2009, but the Rebels lost four from last year's lineup and then Kalle Norberg was sidelined for the year with an injury. So Thiemann stepped up to play No. 1 singles and earned All-SEC first team honors as well as became the program's 25th All-American.
