Women's Tennis Season Ends In NCAA Individuals

5/29/2010 | Women's Tennis

ATHENS, Ga. - The Ole Miss women's tennis team's outstanding season came to a conclusion here Friday in the NCAA Individual Championships at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex.

In singles, Kristi Boxx lost to the No. 4 seed, Hillary Barte (Stanford), in straight sets. Boxx led the first set 3-1, but Barte won five straight games to take it 6-3. She carried that momentum into the second set, winning it 6-2.

Boxx won two rounds in the singles to become the eighth All-American in the history of the program. The Grenada, Miss., native ends the year at 17-15 overall.

Later in the day Boxx teamed up with Karen Nijssen in doubles against the Georgia duo of Chelsey Gullickson and Nadja Gilchrist. Boxx and Nijssen, ranked No. 12 in the nation, seemed to be in control, winning the first set 6-1. But Gullickson and Gilchrist, ranked No. x, rallied to win the second set 6-3. They led 4-0 in the third, but Boxx and Nijssen came back and had break points to pull even, before Georgia closed it out 6-4.

Boxx and Nijssen finished the year at 25-10. They helped lead the Rebels to their first ever outright SEC Western Division Championship, the SEC Tournament Semifinals and the NCAA Sweet Sixteen.
