Rebel Golf Concludes Season At NCAA Regional

5/9/2010 | Women's Golf

COLUMBUS, Ind. - The Ole Miss women's golfers came into the final round of the NCAA Central Regional with an opportunity to qualify for the NCAA Championships for the first time in the history of the program. That will have to wait another year, as the Rebels shot a 326 and finished 12th in the final standings with a 952 total.

The Rebels came into the last round tied for eighth, just three out of the top five, but struggled from the outset with the 25 mph hour winds and a much cooler temperatures.

"It was a tough day out there today with the 30 degree drop in temperature and 25mph winds," head coach Michele Drinkard said. "We are very proud of the team for stepping up and taking on the challenge, and although we didn't play well enough to advance to the National Championship it wasn't because of lack of effort."

Senior Sara Grantham led Ole Miss with a 78. She ended her career as a second team All-SEC honoree. She tied for fifth at the SEC Championships for her best finish ever at the conference championship.

Sophomore Haley Millsap was the top finisher overall for the Rebels, carding a 77-77-80-234 to tie for 26th. She along with the rest of the lineup all return next year, while the Rebels add Florida standout Christina Miller, who signed in the fall.

Drinkard says while the team did not advance, it was still a pretty good year, and the program is definitely headed in the right direction.

"They have worked real hard this spring to learn how to deal with distractions during a round and now know what it takes to step up and play on the next level in the NCAA," she said. "We didn't achieve all of our goals this year, but we did check many off our list. That is quite an accomplishment."

The top eight teams advanced to the NCAA Championship s in Wilmington, N.C. Southern California finished with a total of 907 to beat top-seeded Arizona State (915) by eight. Other teams advancing include Purdue, New Mexico, Oklahoma State, Florida State, Oregon and Kent State.
