Rebels Knock Off Kentucky On 'enior Day?

5/9/2010 | Softball

OXFORD, Miss. - With Ole Miss celebrating 'Senior Day' on Sunday, a pair of seniors came up big to help lift the Rebels to a 5-3 over Kentucky. Seniors Ashley Dowdy and Lauren Grill combined to drive-in three runs to give Ole Miss a win in its final regular-season game.

With the bases loaded and one out and trailing 2-0 in the third, Grill smashed a two-run double to left. Wildcat left fielder Annie Rowlands misplayed Grill's two-bagger and allowed another run to score and Grill to move to third. Shortstop Molly Johnson then tried to make a play on Grill at third, but her errant throw rolled away from the base and allowed Grill to score to put Ole Miss up 4-2. Grill finished the game 2-for-3 at the plate with two RBI and a run scored.

"We really played together as a team today and picked up a big win," said Ole Miss head coach Missy Dickerson. "This was a great way to finish out the regular season."

Kentucky jumped on the scoreboard with two runs in the top of the first aided by a pair of Ole Miss errors. Shortstop Molly Johnson singled to start the game and moved to third when Natalie Smith reached on a fielding error by Rebel third baseman Ashley Dowdy. Johnson then scored on catcher Megan Yocke's single through the left side before Smith and pinch runner Jennifer Young pulled off a double steal of second and home to put the Wildcats up 2-0.

Wildcat third baseman Brittany Cervantes cut the Ole Miss lead to 4-3 in the fifth with an RBI single to right. The Wildcats had runners on second and third with only one out, but Ole Miss reliever Brittany Barnhill got a fly out and a strike out wrapped around a walk to get the Rebels out of the jam.

Dowdy blasted a solo home run deep to left in the bottom of the sixth that gave the Rebels an insurance run at 5-3. It was her second homer of the season.

Senior Becky Nye picked up the win after starting and allowing just one earned run in 4.1 innings of work. She gave up six hits and struck out one. Barnhill earned the save after pitching the final 2.2 innings and striking out four. She allowed no runs and just one hit for her first save of the season.
