OXFORD, Miss. - Former Rebel shortstop Kevin Mort has signed a free agent contract with the Pittsburgh Pirates, the organization announced recently.
Mort played shortstop for the Rebels for the past two seasons after transferring to Ole Miss from Rio Hondo Community College where he was a two-time All-Conference selection and was named to the 2008 All-Southern California Team. In his sophomore season at Rio Hondo, Mort hit .388 with 26 RBI and 14 doubles while scoring 39 runs.
In his two-year career at Ole Miss, Mort stated 125-of-126 games played and hit .285 with 70 runs scored and 56 RBI. The right-hander also fielded at a .974 clip for his career, committing only 13 errors in the field in that span, the fewest for any shortstop in the Southeastern Conference over the last two seasons combined.
Mort only struck out 32 times in 453 at bats and drew 40 walks over his two-year career in Oxford. He helped the Rebels to the 2009 SEC Championship and a pair of NCAA Regional appearances that extended the school's streak to eight consecutive NCAA Regional appearances. Mort also helped Ole Miss advance to an NCAA Super Regional in 2009, marking the fourth time in the last six years to advance to a Super Regional.
As a senior in 2010, he hit .284 with two home runs and came up with some big hits for the Rebels. Mort hit his first home run against Saint Louis in a 3-for-5 performance as he drove in three runs and scored two while notching a pair of steals. He hit his second home run at Georgia in the eighth inning to snap a 1-1 tie and put the Rebels up in a game Ole Miss would go on to win 4-1.
Mort also hit the game-winning single in the ninth inning against LSU in Sunday's game to complete a sweep of the Tigers as part of a 10-game winning streak for the Rebels.
