Goforth, Tracy Selected In Day Three Of MLB Draft
6/9/2010 | Baseball
OXFORD, Miss. - Two more Rebels heard their names called as a part of the MLB Draft on when right-hander David Goforth and left-hander Matt Tracy were both taken on the third day of the draft Wednesday.
A redshirt sophomore, Goforth was taken in the 31st round by the Cleveland Indians, joining teammate Drew Pomearnz in being drafted by the Indians' organization. Tracy, a junior, was drafted in the 43rd round by the Florida Marlins.
The duo joins Pomeranz, senior right-hander Aaron Barrett and junior outfielder Tim Ferguson as Rebels selected in the 2010 MLB Draft.
A versatile pitcher, Goforth began his career in 2009 as a closer, but shifted from the bullpen and into the starting role midway through his second year with the Rebels. The right-hander made his first collegiate start in a win over Mississippi State in the Governor's Cup game at Trustmark Park before sliding into the weekend rotation as Ole Miss' Sunday starter for the remainder of the season.
Goforth posted three saves on the year against Austin Peay and a pair of saves on the road at Tulane in 2010 before making the transition to the role of starter.
"It's definitely exciting because it's the first time I've been drafted and it's exciting to see your name up on the board," Goforth said. "At the same time, it's hectic because I've been on the phone all day trying to decide what I need to do and talking with the area scout. I guess the Indians like Ole Miss players. It's exciting to know I'd be in the same organization with some guys that I know like Drew Pomeranz and Jordan Henry."
Tracy followed a similar path as Goforth in his three years with the Rebels, starting his career in the bullpen as a freshman and sophomore before serving as both a starter and middle relief pitcher in his junior season at Ole Miss.
The southpaw demonstrated the ability to serve as a two-way player in his junior season, making 29 appearances at the plate as he saw time in the outfield and as a designated hitter in 2010, hitting his first career home run in a start against Austin Peay.
"It's really exciting and always been a dream for any college baseball player to be drafted by a Major League team," Tracy said. "I know Florida is a great organization that has developed some young talent like Ole Miss' Chris Coghlan, so I am excited about joining the organization."
