OXFORD, Miss. -- The UMAA Foundation's Vaught Society continues its exponential growth, as Foundation Executive Director Danny White announced Thursday a $1 million gift by Ed and Jan Trehern.
The Trehern commitment consists of a $500,000 investment in the enhancement of the Indoor Practice Facility for the football program and $225,000 for the development of a basketball hospitality room in Tad Smith Coliseum. It also includes $275,000 already received for the existing baseball coaches' offices and the recently installed padded outfield fences for baseball and softball.
"We are grateful to Ed and Jan for their generous contributions towards facility construction and enhancements for Ole Miss Athletics," said John Hartwell, Senior Executive Associate A.D. and COO of the UMAA Foundation. "As appreciative as we are of the financial support of Ed and Jan, their friendship, support and encouragement of our coaches, administration, and student-athletes are also great assets to Ole Miss Athletics."
With the generosity of the Treherns and others, the Vaught Society has exceeded the $5 million mark. The organization, which launched its efforts in January, is rapidly approaching its goal of $12.5 million.
"Ed and Jan understand the commitment essential to success in college athletics, and we are extremely proud of their leadership in the Vaught Society," White said. "Their generosity will be felt across Ole Miss Athletics and provides a philanthropic standard for others to achieve."
Natives of Pascagoula, Miss., Jan and Ed have a true passion for athletics. Jan's involvement in sports can be traced to six years as a cheerleader at Pascagoula Jr. High and High School. She then attended Ole Miss and earned a degree in education in 1977. Jan taught elementary school for five years before becoming a full time mother to their two daughters, Kourtni and Kimily.
Ed has been involved in athletics throughout his life, including serving as football captain for Mississippi College. He graduated in general business from MC in 1969 and went on to teach and coach at both the high school and middle school levels, prior to a successful career in business.
"Athletics has been played a pivotal role in my life, as it does with so many others," Trehern said. "Jan and I are excited to have the opportunity to fortify the role of sports in the lives of Ole Miss student-athletes."
