July 23, 2010

HOOVER, Ala. - Ole Miss defensive tackle Jerrell Powe and defensive end Kentrell Lockett were named to the 2010 All-Southeastern Conference Media Days Football Team released Friday.

Powe was voted to the first team, while Lockett made the second team. The teams were voted on by the media attending SEC Football Media Days.

Earlier this week, Powe was named preseason All-SEC first team by the coaches. Powe has been a popular preseason first team all-conference pick this summer by the various media outlets, many of which tabbed him an All-America. He has also been selected to watch lists for some of college football's top awards, including the Outland Trophy, Bronko Nagurski Trophy and the Rotary Lombardi Award.

A starter in 10 games last season, Powe helped lead a Rebel defense that topped the SEC and rank 11th nationally in TFLs and 14th in sacks. Ole Miss held the opposition under 300 yards of total offense seven times, including five SEC games, and ranked 15th in the nation in scoring defense.

Powe earned 2009 second team All-SEC accolades and tied for eighth in the conference and the team lead in TFLs with 12.0. The Waynesboro, Miss., native also totaled 34 tackles, three sacks, two pressures and a forced fumble.

Lockett received the 2010 Chucky Mullins Courage Award and the distinction of wearing the "38" patch on his jersey during his senior season to honor the late Chucky Mullins, whose Ole Miss career as a defensive back came to an end in 1989 when he was paralyzed in a game against Vanderbilt.

Lockett started all 13 games at right end last year. The Hahnville, La., native recorded a team-high 13 QB pressures. He ranked second on the team in both TFLs (10.0) and sacks (5.0).

The defending SEC and national champion Alabama Crimson Tide had a league-high

12 representatives on the 2010 All-Southeastern Conference Media Days Football Team, while defending Eastern Division Champion Florida had 10 total selections.

The 177 voters also selected the Crimson Tide to defeat the Gators in the SEC Football Championship Game on Dec. 4 in Atlanta.

The Crimson Tide was on 143 ballots for the winner of the SEC Championship Game and was on all 157 ballots to win the Western Division. Florida was predicted to win the SEC title on 17 ballots while Auburn was on seven, Arkansas three, Ole Miss and Georgia two and LSU, South Carolina and Kentucky on one each.

Following Alabama in the Western Division was Arkansas second, Auburn third, LSU fourth, Mississippi State fifth and Ole Miss sixth.

Filling out the Eastern Division, Georgia was predicted to finish second, South Carolina third, Kentucky fourth, Tennessee fifth and Vanderbilt sixth. Florida was on 153 ballots as the first-place team in the Eastern Division.
