Volleyball Rebels Progress In Preseason Workouts

OXFORD, Miss.- The Ole Miss volleyball team concluded its first week of preseason drills on Friday, impressing head coach Joe Getzin with the squad's work in early training for the upcoming season.

"We're off to a very good start," Getzin said. "The team has really shown that the work they put it on their own over the summer and the drill work they did has paid off. We have progressed quickly and the team jumped right into working on our system because of their off-season work."

One area that has caught the eye of the ninth-year head coach was the play of his middle blockers.

"Regina Thomas, Miranda Kitts and Courtney Cunningham are hitting the ball very well," Getzin said of his middles. "It's nice to see their progress. Our transitions are quicker than they have ever been and that's helping us."

Also standing out to the Rebel head coach has been the play of senior setter Emily Kvitle, who is transitioning into the setter role full time after spending much of her career as a utility player capable of playing any position.

"Emily is really settling into her role as a setter," Getzin said. "She is more comfortable with the position than she has ever been. We are really reaping the benefits of her leadership because she's able to just go out and play the game instead of thinking about things as much."

The Rebels will continue preseason drills through next week before hosting a scrimmage on Saturday, Aug. 21 at 10 a.m. prior to the annual Meet the Rebels event.

Ole Miss opens the 2010 season on the road at a tournament at Rice University where the Rebels will face UT-San Antonio, Texas Tech and Rice. The tournament begins on Friday, Aug. 27 when the Rebels face UT-San Antonio at 4:30 p.m.
