Women's Tennis Earns Academic Award

OXFORD, Miss. - The Ole Miss women's tennis team was one of only four programs in the nation to finish the 2010 season ranked in the top 20 and earn the prestigious Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) All-Academic Team Award.
In addition, the Rebels, who earned the distinction for the 14th consecutive year, were the only SEC team to finish in the top 20 and receive this award.
This award honors teams with outstanding academic achievements, requiring a minimum overall 3.2 grade point average to be considered. The Rebels finished the year with a 3.43 GPA.
Ole Miss won the SEC West Championship, advanced to the NCAA Sweet Sixteen and ended the year ranked No. 17 in the nation.
"We're very proud of the team for achieving the ITA All-Academic Team Award again. To be one of only four teams in the nation and the only one in the SEC to reach that kind of level on and off the court is outstanding," said Mark Beyers, who will enter his ninth year with the program in 2010-11.
"When you look at how few schools are able to attain this level of success on and off the court, it shows the hard work and determination that the girls put in to achieve the right balance. Those are the type of athletes we want representing the University of Mississippi and our program."
The ITA also announced individual honors, with upcoming seniors Laura van de Stroet and Connor Vogel and juniors Abby Guthrie and Gabby Rangel earning recognition as ITA Scholar-Athletes. While helping the Rebels to a championship season, all four excelled in the classroom. Rangel boasted a perfect 4.0 GPA last year, and van de Stroet was right behind with a 3.90. Guthrie tallied a 3.78, and Vogel earned a 3.72.
To be eligible for ITA Scholar-Athlete recognition student-athletes must have a GPA of 3.50 or higher for the year.
