OXFORD, Miss. - The Ole Miss Rebel football team took to the practice fields on Tuesday for the first practice after the start of fall classes. Head coach Houston Nutt was pleased with the workout, but wants to see his team close on a stronger note.
"We had a good day today, except towards the end," Nutt said. "We turned the ball over and had a bad snap. We have to take care of the ball. That's why we work on the snapping drill. For the most part it was pretty good after the day off yesterday."
Nut announced that senior safety Fon Ingram will have his knee scoped on Thursday to repair some torn cartridge. Ingram's surgery will take place at the University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson and he is expected to miss up to four weeks.
With the injury to Ingram, Nutt said he is looking to the others safeties to fill the void left by the senior. "Brishen Mathews has to get ready for college ball," Nutt said. "He has no choice, he has to get ready. He isn't quite there, yet. He still needs about ten more days. Damien Jackson is getting more comfortable at both safety positions. We need both those guys and Johnny Brown to step up."
In other position news, Nutt also announced that redshirt freshman safety Terrell Grant had moved to wide receiver, the position he started at in college.
After watching film of Saturday's scrimmage, Nutt noted that he was pleased with the depth the Rebels had developed at running back.
"I feel good about our running backs. I know with Brandon Bolden and Enrique Davis we can pound the ball. You have Devin Thomas and Rodney Scott, who can both run the ball. Then you have a guy like Jeff Scott, who has a different speed."
After winning back-to-back Cotton Bowl and hauling in back-to-back top-20 recruiting class, Nutt said he loves the Rebels' position in recruiting, especially in the state of Mississippi.
"It has been really great in the state of Mississippi this year. I'm just so excited. I'm proud of the ones we have and that starts with the ones we have on the field. I'm really excited to have as many commitments as we do in August, because there are so many quality players in the state."
Ole Miss will hit the practice fields again tomorrow as the Rebels prepare for the 2010 season opener against Jacksonville State on Sept. 4 at 2:30 p.m. Season tickets are available on the OleMissSports.com ticket site or by calling 1-888-732-8587.
