OXFORD. Miss. - Highlighted by a pair of heralded quarterbacks, Ole Miss welcomed a group of new faces to its football program Friday as newcomers reported for the start of preseason camp.
Notable amongst the list is QB transfers Jeremiah Masoli from Oregon and Randall Mackey from East Mississippi Community College. Mackey has been working out with the team since June after enrolling at Ole Miss for first summer term.
Other 2010 signees that enrolled in the summer include Will Denny, Jared Duke, Martez Eastland, Terrence Hackney, Clarence Jackson, Carlton Martin, Brishen Mathews and Carlos Thompson. In addition, three signees -- freshman Chase Hughes and JUCO transfers Wayne Dorsey and Damien Jackson -- arrived at Ole Miss in January and participated in spring drills.
"We're excited," Ole Miss head coach Houston Nutt told reporters at Friday's press conference. "We've got most of our freshmen reporting today. We will have our first organized meeting tonight. We had a good summer. Now it's time to go. We're looking forward to it.
"It's been a different summer. We don't usually recruit in August. Jeremiah Masoli is here now, going through the process of checking in and all those things. We're excited about him being here."
Nutt said that other members of the Rebels' 15th-ranked signing class will be joining the team for camp in the days to come.
"I feel good about the ones that are not here right now," he said. "I feel good about those guys being qualified. A lot of them didn't get to go to first-session summer school and went to second-session only, and it makes it tough for the turnaround - to get transcripts and grades back on transcripts. I feel good about the guys that we signed and eventually they will be here."
The Rebel varsity players will report to fall camp Saturday, while practice begins Sunday. Fans will have the opportunity for a sneak peak at the squad, as workouts the first week will be open to the public. Sunday's practice begins at 4:25 p.m. CT, and the weekday workouts are set for 5:20 p.m. The time of Saturday's scrimmage, which is the final open practice, will be announced at a later date at twitter.com/OleMissNow.
Use of cellular phones and cameras are prohibited for fans at practice, and fans must remain in the designated area. When the team practices outdoors, fans are not allowed between the practice fields.
