The Rebels (1-1) return from a trip to the Big Easy, where they defeated Tulane 27-13 behind Jeremiah Masoli's 281 yards passing in his first Ole Miss start. The senior signal caller was 14-of-20 with a touchdown and an interception in the win.
"Much better lessons can be taught after a win, and that was much needed," Rebel head coach Houston Nutt said. "I still think our guys can see that we have a lot of improving to do. We can get better, but there were a lot of positive things."
Markeith Summers also had a strong performance against the Green Wave, racking up five catches for a career-high 165 yards. He caught a 70-yard touchdown strike from Masoli, and his total of 165 receiving yards is the sixth-highest in school history.
Through two games, Masoli ranks fourth in the SEC with 195 passing yards per game and fifth with a passing efficiency of 176.9. Summers is third in the league with 98.5 receiving yards per game. Sophomore kicker Bryson Rose is a perfect 4-of-4 on field goals and 9-of-9 on PATs and ranks second in the SEC with 21 points scored.
"I was really proud of Markeith Summers (against Tulane). He gave us a lift down the field with some big plays," Nutt said. "Jeremiah played very, very well. We have to continue to get better. We are playing a very good football team in Vanderbilt. They played very well against LSU and it was close all the way up until the fourth quarter."
Vanderbilt (0-2, 0-1 SEC) suffered a 27-3 loss to the Tigers in its SEC opener on Saturday. Sean Richardson was the defensive standout for the Commodores, logging 10 tackles, including one for a loss from his strong safety spot.
Commodore quarterback Larry Smith is 27-of-48 passing for 310 yards with a touchdown and an interception. Running back Warren Norman ranks eighth in the SEC with 144 all-purpose yards per game.
Led by first-year head coach Robbie Caldwell, Vanderbilt dropped its season opener to Northwestern 23-21.
Today marks the 85th meeting all-time between the two teams, with Ole Miss holding a 47-35-2 edge. The Rebels won 23-7 last year in Nashville. The series is lopsided in Oxford, with Ole Miss holding a 22-4 edge, despite a 23-17 loss in 2008.
