Women's Tennis Has Successful Start To Season

MEMPHIS, Tenn. - The Ole Miss women's tennis team had a successful start to the 2011 season Friday, winning eight of nine matches at the Memphis Winter Invitational here at the Racquet Club of Memphis.
The day began with the Rebels taking all three doubles matches from Memphis. Senior Laura van de Stroet and freshman Vivian Vlaar teamed up to post an 8-6 win against Kathleen Hawkins/Kelly Gray. Connor Vogel and Gabby Rangel downed Courtney Collins/Andrea Arques-Garcia 8-3. On the final court, the 22nd-ranked duo of Kristi Boxx and Abby Guthrie struggled early against Stefanie Mikesz/Mariya Slupska, but rallied to win it 9-8.
Following doubles, Ole Miss took to the courts in singles against BYU and won five of the six matches.
Boxx, ranked No. 21 in the nation, beat Megan Price 6-4, 6-3, Vogel dominated Elle Carney 6-1, 6-1, Laura van de Stroet downed Callie Craig 6-2, 6-1, Vlaar defeated Elizaveta Ezhova 7-5, 7-6(2), and Gabby Rangel beat Aubrey Paul 6-3, 3-6, 6-2.
"We are very proud of the girls," head coach Mark Beyers said. "It's very early in the semester. We just started practice on Monday, and they haven't started school. It's so valuable to get sets in against a quality opponent. We're really going to learn a lot about ourselves this weekend. Coach Ontog and I will use this for next week to know what we're doing well and what we need to work on. It's a good start, and I hope that we get better every day as the weekend goes on."
Saturday's action will feature a round of doubles against BYU at 12 p.m., followed by singles against Missouri beginning at 2 p.m. and singles versus Memphis at 7:30 p.m.
Freshman Caroline Rohde-Moe of Norway, who arrived in Oxford on Thursday, will make her debut for the Rebels on Saturday.
