Nashville, Tenn. - The Ole Miss women's basketball team entered Sunday's game at Vanderbilt looking for its first win against the Commodores in Nashville since January of 1987.
But, Vanderbilt broke open the game with a 24-2 run in the first half to lead by 22, as the Ole Miss women's basketball team fell at Vanderbilt 71-42.
In their first meeting earlier this month, Ole Miss came back from an 18-point deficit to win. But, Sunday's game was a different story as the Rebels could never regain the advantage after an early 4-3 lead.
With the loss, Ole Miss fell to 9-11 overall (2-5 SEC) while Vanderbilt improved to 14-7 overall (5-3 SEC).
A three from Shae Nelson tied the game at 7-7 with 15:55 left in the first half before Vanderbilt went on a 24-2 run spanning over 12 minutes as the Commodores went up 31-9 with 3:35 remaining in the half.
Vanderbilt led 35-15 at the half. Ole Miss shot 25 percent (7-of-28) from the floor in the half while the Commodores shot 44.8 percent (13-of-29). Kayla Melson and Valencia McFarland each had four points at the half for the Rebels.
Ole Miss' woes continued in the second half as the Rebels missed their first 11 shots from the floor until Nelson's putback with 13:44 left in the game.
Vanderbilt extended its lead to 34, 58-24, with 6:46 to play.
Nelson led Ole Miss with 12 points while Melson finished with 11.
Ole Miss will play at Florida on Thursday at 6 p.m. CT before hosting LSU on Sunday at 1 p.m. The LSU game will be televised by the SEC Network.
