OXFORD, Miss. - The Ole Miss women's tennis team will begin the 2011 season ranked No. 18 in the nation as the preseason ITA National Rankings were released Tuesday by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association.
The defending SEC West Champions return five of the top six from last year's NCAA Sweet Sixteen team including Grenada, Miss., native Kristi Boxx. The All-American is ranked No. 21 in the nation in singles and No. 22 in doubles with junior Abby Guthrie. Germantown, Tenn., native Connor Vogel is ranked No. 124 in singles.
Also back for the Rebels is senior Laura van de Stroet and junior Gabby Rangel. Freshman Vivian Vlaar joined the team in the fall and posted an 8-3 record.
Ole Miss is one of 16 teams in the country to have both its men's and women's tennis teams ranked in the top 25, as the men also earned a No. 18 ranking.
Defending NCAA Champion Stanford claimed the top spot in the preseason rankings followed by 2010 NCAA runner-up Florida. The SEC boasts six teams in the top 25.
Ole Miss kicks off the 2011 season Jan. 14 at the Memphis Winter Invitational. The Rebels' first dual match will be Jan. 25 against Southern Mississippi at the Gillom Sports Center.
