Rebels In Second At David Toms Intercollegiate

SHREVEPORT, La. - Paced by four players in the top 15, the Ole Miss men's golf team finished day one of the David Toms Intercollegiate in second place with a 1-under 575 at the Southern Trace Country Club.
Senior Joe David led the Rebels, firing a 3-under 69 in the first round followed with an even-par 72 in the second round to sit in a tie for third, just three back of Oklahoma's Michael Schoolcraft. David now has nine rounds at or under par this year. He will seek his third top five showing of the year.
Schoolcraft helped the Sooners take the first day lead at 7-under. Host LSU is in third at +4 followed by Tulsa (+6) in fourth and SMU and Lamar tied for fifth at +9.
The freshmen have been solid for the Rebels this year, and they continued that Monday, with both Joe Lewis and Blake Morris shooting an ever par 144 to tie for ninth. Sophomore Tom Brown carded a 146 to tie for 14th and round out the Rebel scoring.
"We had a good team effort. The 36-hole days are always a test of fortitude and attitude. Our players are in good physical shape, and they kept a positive attitude all day," head coach Ernest Ross said. "It was probably easier because we were close to the lead, but we preach positive attitude all the time."
The Rebels have posted seven of their 11 rounds at or under par. They will be going for their third top five finish in the first four tournaments.
"We will have a good battle tomorrow. We have been close to the lead several times this year. We need to finish the deal," Ross said.
