TEMPE, Ariz. - The Ole Miss Rebel softball team dropped both games on opening day of the 2011 season at the Kajikawa Classic, falling to Utah and San Jose State on Thursday.

Three Ole Miss errors allowed Utah to score six unearned runs, as the Rebels fell 10-0 to the Utes at the in the opening game.

A bases-loaded error by outfielder Amanda Hutcheson allowed three Utah runners to score in the third to stake the Utes to a 6-0 lead. Utah jumped on the board in the first on RBI singles by designated player Cheyella Myers and shortstop Kelsi Hoopiiaina.

Leftfielder Brittany Broome led the Rebels at the plate recording two singles in two at-bats. Brittany Barnhill, Erinn Jayjohn and Cali Overbeck each also singled.

Senior Lindsey Perry suffered the loss for Ole Miss after she allowed four runs, three earned, on four hits in one inning of work.

Game Two

Junior Kendall Bruning struck out nine in a complete-game effort, but the Rebels dropped game two 3-2 to San Jose State on Thursday.

The Spartans jumped on the scoreboard in the top of the first on back-to-back RBI singles from designated player Breanna Lopez and catcher Jessica Garcia.

Ole Miss answered back in the bottom of the frame with a run to cut the San Jose State lead to 2-1. With one down, leftfielder Brittany Broome and third baseman Cali Overbeck knocked back-to-back singles to give the Rebels runners on first and second. After a wild pitch moved both runners into scoring position, first baseman Brittany Barnhill's RBI groundout scored Ole Miss' first run.

Shortstop BranDee Garica extended to the San Jose State lead to 3-1 in the fourth with a leadoff home run to left field.

The Rebels cut the lead to 3-2 in the bottom of the fourth with after pitcher Kendall Bruning and centerfielder RT Cantillo each singled with two outs. Catcher Kelly Nolan then slapped a ball to short, which was booted by BranDee Garcia, and allowed Bruning to score from second. However, that was all the scoring the Ole Miss offense could produce.

Broome led the Rebels at the plate collecting three singles, while Overbeck added two more.

Bruning took the complete-game loss for the Rebels after giving up three runs on five hits. She struck out nine in seven innings of work.
