Rebels Cruise Past Mississippi Valley State

OXFORD, Miss. - Kendall Bruning struck out nine batters and Corrine Doornberg and Londen Ladner each knocked in two runs as Ole Miss cruised past Mississippi Valley State 6-1 in the Rebels home opener on Tuesday.

Ladner got the Rebels on the scoreboard in the bottom of the first with a two-out, RBI single down the left field line that plated RT Cantillo, who reached on a walk. Doornberg added to the Ole Miss lead in the second with an RBI double into left that put the Rebels up 2-0 after two.

"We a good job of coming out and taking care of business," said Ole Miss head coach Missy Dickerson. "We need to keep that mindset this weekend."

Mississippi Valley State answered back in the top of the third with a two-out, RBI double by Ahsley Hobbs that cut the Ole Miss lead to 2-1. Ladner responded in the bottom of the frame with another RBI single up the middle that extended the lead to 3-1.

Ole Miss posted three runs in the sixth on RBI singles by Natalie Nimmo and Marina Parra and an RBI double from Doornberg that gave the Rebels a 6-1 lead after six.

Lander went 2-for-3 in the game with two RBI and Doornberg also added two hits and two RBI in four at-bats. Bruning picked up her first win of the season after allowing one run on three hits in seven innings of work. She struck out a season-high nine in the complete-game effort.

Next up, Ole Miss will host the annual Red & Blue Classic this weekend in Oxford. Games begin on Friday at 9 a.m. and the Rebels play their first game of the tournament versus Austin Peay at 1 p.m.
