Ole Miss Drops Series Finale At South Carolina

COLUMBIA, S.C. - The Ole Miss Rebel softball team dropped the series finale to the South Carolina Gamecocks, 7-1, on Sunday at Beckham Field in Columbia.
South Carolina (16-7, 3-2 SEC) took an early 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first after a pair of Ole Miss errors allowed the Gamecocks to score three unearned runs. A throwing error by third baseman Londen Ladner allowed South Carolina to load the bases and with two down an errant throw by shortstop Marina Parra on a ground ball allowed two unearned runs to score. Then a bases-loaded walk by Rebel starting pitcher Kendall Bruning plated the Gamecock's final run of the frame.
The Gamecocks extended their lead in the bottom of the third with a two-run single to left by pinch hitter Kaela Jackson that gave South Carolina a 5-0 advantage. Leftfielder Kaitlin Westfall added to the lead once again in the fourth with a two-run home run to left that put the Gamecocks up 7-0.
The Rebels (9-18, 0-3 SEC) manufactured a run in the top of sixth after right fielder Amanda Hutcheson singled to right to with one down and stole second. Second baseman Natalie Nimmo then laced a single back up the middle that scored Hutcheson for Ole Miss' only run of the game.
Bruning suffered the loss for the Rebels after allowing seven runs, four earned, on seven hits in six innings of work. She struck out one and walked three.
Next up, Ole Miss will travel to Conway, Ark., on Wednesday for a non-conference tilt against Central Arkansas. First pitch is set for 5 p.m.
