March 20, 2011

MEMPHIS, Tenn. - Ole Miss claimed first place in 13 different events at the Rhodes College Open over the weekend to get its outdoor track and field season off to a strong start.

Among the various winners were Sofie Persson's victory in the 400 meter hurdles, Marci Morman's title in the triple jump and the Rebel women sweeping the three relay events. Standing out on the men's side was Carson Blanks' 400 meter hurdle victory and Kentrell Sanders and Morris Kersh going 1-2 in the triple jump.

Persson, who was recently crowned an Indoor All-American in the 800 meters, won the 400 meter hurdles with a time of 58.30, which was the third-fastest mark in the nation in the opening weekend of outdoor competition.

Morman won the triple jump with a personal-best leap of 40-03.50 to mark the eighth-best jump in the country.

The relay sweep saw the women cross the finish line first in the 4x100 (45.61), 4x400 (3:49.70) and 4x800 (9:48.10). The 4x100 team of Kristin Bridges, Brittany Bozeman, Jasmine Williams and Baldwin was especially strong as they clocked the 14th-fastest time in the country in the opening weekend.

Blanks' 400-meter hurdle victory saw him clock a time of 51.85 that ranks sixth nationally, while Sanders' winning triple jump of 50-00.00 is tied for third-best in the nation and Kersh's leap of 49-07.75 ranks fifth.

The other winner on the men's side was the 4x100 meter relay team of Creighton Serrette, Christopher Bush, Montez Griffin and Ras-Len Bully (41.99).

Other winners on the women's side included LaJada Baldwin with a sprint double, winning the 100 meters (11.91) and 200 meters (23.87), Logan Waites in the mile run (5:03.82) and Betty Williams in the shot put (48-06.75) and discus (159-06).

The Rebels were able to produce 13 event champions despite not bringing some of the top athletes who competed during the indoor season.

Ole Miss continues the outdoor season with next weekend's Alabama Relays in Tuscaloosa.
