AWENDAW, S.C. - Ole Miss senior golfer Jonathan Randolph is just one back at the Hootie @ Bulls Bay Intercollegiate after shooting a 3-under 68 in the first round Sunday at the Par-71, 7,298-yard Bulls Bay to lead the Rebels.
Before leaving for the tournament, head coach Ernest Ross talked about wanting his team to get off to a better start in tournaments, as they had not been able to do much this year. The Rebels were tied for the lead for most of the round before finishing with a 5-over 289. They are in 10th among the 15-team field, which includes seven teams in the Top 25. However, the Rebels are not that far back and will look to make a move on Monday in the second round.
"I was very pleased with our start," Ross said. "We have been struggling in the first round, but today we were tied for the lead through 12 holes. The weather really changed in the middle of the round. The temperatures dropped to 48 degrees by the end with rain and wind. It was a tough finish. I was proud of our effort and look forward to our chances tomorrow."
Randolph is tied for fourth at 3-under with three others golfers, and trails three players at 4-under. The All-American from Brandon, Miss., carded four birdies and just one bogey.
Junior Joe David fired a 1-under 70 and is tied for 10th, just three back. He had it to 3-under on his round before bogeying 12, 13 and 15 to fall back to even. A birdie on the par-4 16th left him at 70 for the day.
Juniors Zach Primavera and Billy Brozovich shot 75 and 76, respectively to round out the scoring for the Rebels, who hope to make a move on Monday.
Wake Forest shot 4-under 280, and leads Augusta State (281), Auburn (281) and LSU (281) by one. Texas A&M is just two back at 282.
The Rebels will tee off the second round beginning at 8:00 a.m. CT. Live scoring is available by going to www.OleMissSports.com and clicking on the link in the calendar.
