Women's Tennis Dominates Kentucky 7-0

LEXINGTON, Ky. - The Ole Miss women's tennis team dominated Kentucky 7-0 Friday at the Boone Tennis Complex in the Southeastern Conference opener for both teams. With the win, the Rebels improved to 6-2 overall and 1-0 in the SEC.

The Rebels played the match without their No. 1 player, junior All-American Kristi Boxx. Boxx did not make the trip due to a death in the family.

It didn't affect the outcome at all, as the Rebels all moved up a spot and still came away with a convincing win.

"We are proud of the girls for stepping up and taking care of business on the road against a solid Kentucky team," head coach Mark Beyers said. "We played great in singles and stayed focused. The conditions were difficult at first with sustained winds of 18 to 19 mph and gusts of up to 30 mph. But, we didn't let that bother us. Kentucky pushed us in some spots, but we were able to come through and get a win. We're happy to be 1-0 in the SEC and looking forward to Sunday's match at Vanderbilt."

Ole Miss got on the board first by sweeping the doubles. Caroline Rohde-Moe and Laura van de Stroet won 8-5 at No. 2. The Rebels clinched the point at No. 3 as Abby Guthrie teamed with Vivian Vlaar for an 8-3 win.

In singles, Ole Miss won all six first sets to maintain the momentum. Gabby Rangel downed Misha Testerman 6-1, 6-2 at six, and Vlaar remained undefeated in her freshman campaign, cruising 6-1, 6-1 against UK's Marni Venter at No. 5 to make it 3-0. Vlaar is now 8-0 in dual matches.

Guthrie clinched the Rebels' fourth straight victory against Kentucky, defeating Caitlin McGraw (UK) 6-2, 6-4 at No. 3.

Rohde-Moe improved to 7-1 in dual matches with a straight set win at No. 2, and van de Stroet and Connor Vogel both won in straight sets as well to complete the sweep.

Ole Miss will try to go 2-0 on the weekend as they face No. 10 Vanderbilt Sunday at 1 p.m. Live scoring will be available by going to www.OleMissSports.com and clicking on the link in the calendar.
