BLACKSBURG, Va. - The Ole Miss men's golf team opened play in the NCAA East Regional here Thursday at the Pete Dye River Course with sophomore Chad Bounds shooting a 74 to lead the Rebels.
Bounds (Meridian, Miss.), competing in his first ever NCAA Regional, is tied for 14th. He was 2-under through 14 and at the top of the leaderboard until an unfortunate triple bogey on No. 16.
The rest of the team found the going tough, as the Rebels posted a 311. Senior All-American Jonathan Randolph posted his first round in the 80s since his sophomore year, with an 81. Junior Joe David carded a 77, junior Billy Brozovich posted a 79, and freshman Kyle Kmiecik also finished with an 81.
"Chad had a good round on a tough course. The others really struggled," head coach Ernest Ross said. "For the most part, we didn't chip well at all. It seemed like every time we missed a green, we made a bogey. We have not chipped well most of the spring, and we have worked to get better. Today looked like we went back to some old bad habits. The only way to get better, is proper practice-lots of reps. We will do that in our post-round practice."
No team shot under par on the first day. Top-seeded Georgia Tech fired a 1-over 289 and leads Duke (295) by six. Kent State and Oklahoma are tied for third at 296, and Coastal Carolina sits in fifth with a 299. Tech's Kyle Scott carded a 4-under 68 to take the individual lead.
The Rebels will try to improve on their opening round and move up in the second round Friday. Live scoring is available by going to www.OleMissSports.com and clicking on the link in the calendar.
