OXFORD, Miss. - Allegra Wells, a rising junior on the Ole Miss volleyball team, began training with the USA Volleyball A2 National Program on Monday as a part of the USA Volleyball National Open Championship from May 23 through June 1.

The program includes training and competition in the 2011 USA Volleyball Open National Championships in the Open Division from May 28-31. USA Volleyball considers the event as the National Championship for the sport of volleyball in the United States.

Athletes selected to the U.S. Women's National A2 Program were selected from the U.S. Women's National Team Open Tryouts held Feb. 25-27 at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs. A record 204 athletes participated in the three-day tryouts, representing 81 different college programs.

"I'm really excited about a great opportunity like this to get some more experience," Wells said. "It's exciting to be playing with some of the best college volleyball players in the country. I really hope to walk away from this experience having gotten better at the sport of volleyball and grow from the opportunity to get training at this event."

Thirty-six players with remaining college eligibility were selected to participate in the program. The 2011 U.S. Women's National A2 Program will have six setters, nine middle blockers, 11 outside hitters, four opposites and six liberos.

During the training sessions in Dallas, the coaching staff will divide the 36 players into three teams of 12 players to compete in the USA Volleyball Open National Championships. Last year, two A2 teams competed in the Open Division, producing a gold and bronze medal.

This past season, Wells helped the Rebel volleyball team advance to the program's third NCAA Tournament in the last five seasons after posting a 19-11 mark and a second place finish in the SEC Western Division. She averaged 2.5 kills per set last season and put down 268 kills and 72 blocks. Ole Miss finished second in the SEC Western Division and fourth in the overall league standings in 2010.
