OXFORD, Miss. - Rising senior Ashley Lance of the Ole Miss women's golf team will begin defense of her Southern Amateur title next week at the Capital City Club in Atlanta, Ga.

Lance (Franklin, Tenn.) soundly defeated Arkansas' Corinna Rees 9 and 8 in the 36-hole championship final at Lookout Mountain Golf Club last year. After tying for medalist honors in the stroke play qualifying, Lance won her first round match on her way to becoming the first Ole Miss women's golfer to win the Southern Am.

"Ashley's championship has changed her vision and the way she competes. Every time She tees it up she feels she can win, and it has had a positive influence on her teammates," head coach Michele Drinkard said.

Ole Miss supplied the most college entrants at last year's championship and ended up taking home the team title as well as the individual title. Lance and upcoming sophomore Kathryn Fowler posted 72 and 74 respectively, in the match play qualifying last year to win the team trophy.

Once again, the Rebels will be well-represented at the Southern Am. In addition to Lance, Fowler, a native of Americus, Ga., returns to her home state along with incoming freshmen Kaitlin Voll (Alpharetta, Ga.) and Taelor Rubin (Raleigh, N.C.), and junior Alyssa Randolph (Knoxville, Tenn.) and sophomore Shelby Sain (Bolivar, Tenn.).

"The Southern Amateur has great tradition, so it's a tournament we encourage our team to play," Drinkard said. "I am looking forward to seeing our Rebels compete next week.

"Having the 100-year old Southern Am Trophy and the Team Trophy displayed in our Ole Miss Trophy case this past year has been an honor and a privilege. And, needless to say, it has also been a show stopper with future Rebel student-athletes as well."

Play begins Monday with stroke play qualifying. The low 32 players will advance to the championship flight of match play on Tuesday. The field is cut to 16 for Wednesday and to 8 (the quarterfinals) for Thursday morning and 4 (the semis) for Thursday afternoon. Championship flight finals is 36 holes on Friday, June 10.
