MADISON, Miss. - Former Ole Miss golfer Jonathan Randolph shot 69 in his opening round at the PGA Tour's Viking Classic here at Annandale on Thursday and was hoping by Friday evening to be playing his way into the weekend.

The All-American from Brandon definitely will be around for the weekend, thanks to Mother Nature. Rain storms wreaked havoc on Friday, and play was suspended for the final time around 6:45 p.m. Play will resume Saturday at 7 a.m. Randolph will tee off around 7:30 a.m.

With all the rain they've had in Madison this week, conditions have been ripe for low scoring. Randolph posted three birdies in the first round on his way to the 69. The leader in the clubhouse on Friday was Troy Matteson at 12-under.

Randolph had a morning tee time on Thursday and was scheduled to tee off the second round at 1:40 p.m. Friday. After several delays, it finally became 7:15 p.m., before the horn sounded one final time.

"It was a long day. I had the last tee time off, so I knew it would be a long day anyway," Randolph said. "Then we had all the weather delays. Thank goodness the British Open was on, so we could watch that to pass the time."

This is Randolph's second appearance in the Viking Classic. He received a sponsor's exemption last year, but did not make the cut. If he does make the cut, he will have to play his third round the same day, which means 36 holes, barring any more weather issues.

"I definitely think being a lot younger (23) will help, said Randolph, on the potential for a 36-hole day Saturday. I am used to playing 36 holes from college golf and amateur tournaments that I've played in. It's just another everyday occurrence for me. I am going to hang out and relax tonight and just make sure I stay hydrated."

In other golf news, rising senior Joe David fired a 71 in the third round of the Southern Amateur in Tampa, Fla., to move up to a tie for 44th. After opening with a disappointing 76, David shot 72 on Thursday to make the cut. David carded five birdies in the third round, but also had five bogeys to finish at even par.
