OXFORD, Miss. - The Ole Miss soccer team topped the University of Tennessee Martin Friday night in an exhibition game at FNC Park in Oxford.
Sophomore transfer Rafaelle Souza scored what proved to be the game-winner in the 65th minute. After battling for the ball in the box, Souza was pulled down from behind and converted the penalty kick.
"This was a good opening match for us," second-year head coach Matt Mott said. "We were able to play a lot of people and get a good look at the team after a week of training. We've got a lot of work to do but I'm happy at this point in preseason. I'm looking forward to the opener next week."
In the eighth minute Mandy McCalla hit a shot off a free kick to the far post that forced Tennessee-Martin keeper Mariah Klenke to made a diving safe to the right to keep the Rebels off the board.
In the 15th minute, McCalla found Dylan Jordan wide on the right. Jordan took touches towards the goal, cut in and hit a shot that had the keeper beat but her shot hit the side netting.
Rosalina Loza found herself through the Ole Miss defense in the 38th minute but Meredith Snow tracked her back and deflected her ball out of the box.
In the 56th minute, Emily Reid took the ball into the box and hit a shot to the far post that narrowly missed Jenna Strother at the far post.
In the 70th minute Tennessee-Martin's Loza hit a point-blank shot but freshman keeper Kelly McCormick came off her line and made a kick-save to keep the Rebels' lead intact.
Ole Miss will host Southern Miss on Friday night at 7 p.m. at the Ole Miss Soccer Stadium. The first 100 fans who bring the coupon to the game from facebook.com/olemisssoccer page and have it stamped at the gate, will receive two free tickets to the Ole Miss/BYU football game on Sept. 3.
