ST. SIMONS ISLAND, Ga. - Incoming Rebel golfer Joe Lewis, of Savannah, Ga., earned his first AJGA victory at the Frederica Junior Open with an 11-under-par 205 tournament total here Thursday at Frederica Golf Club.
Lewis, who will join the Rebels later this month, shot 68-67-70 for the three days to eclipse Parker Derby of Columbus, Ga., by one stroke.
Lewis was able to capitalize on clutch shots on the back nine to secure his victory. Lewis credited his eagle on No. 15 to his success down the stretch.
"I was even-par until No. 15 and one shot up, so I wanted to be a little aggressive," he said. "I went for the green in two and hit my approach to five feet for eagle. I knew I had a really good chance for the win after my seven-foot par putt on No. 17 put me two shots up."
AJGA alumni have risen to the top of amateur, collegiate and professional golf. Former AJGA juniors have compiled more than 500 victories on the PGA and LPGA Tours. AJGA alumni include Stewart Cink, Matt Kuchar, Hunter Mahan, Phil Mickelson and Tiger Woods.
