OXFORD, Miss. - No. 20 Auburn topped the Ole Miss soccer team 3-2 Friday night in a physical match at the Ole Miss Soccer Stadium.
With the loss, Ole Miss fell to 4-6-1 (0-3 SEC) this season while Auburn improved to 9-1-1 (3-0 SEC).
In a physical match which saw a combined 27 fouls and two yellow cards, the Rebels and Tigers traded goals all night.
"It was a great SEC game. Hard fought, back and forth and it's one of those games that is really tough to lose," head coach Matt Mott said. "We were in it the whole time fighting and scratching and to not be able to get a result makes it hard."
Auburn took a 1-0 lead in the 15th minute as Mary Coffed played a ball to Ana Cate through the Ole Miss defense. Cate took the pass and was able to get in a one-versus-one situation with Rebel goalkeeper Alley Ronaldi.
Ole Miss tied the game in the 39th minute as Jenna Strother scored her third goal of the season. She finished a cross off the back post from Rafaelle Souza.
The Tigers retook the lead in the 45th minute as Lydia Townsend was able to finish a shot that hit off the post that teammate Kim Spence took.
In the second half, Auburn went up 3-1 in the 72nd minute on a goal from Tatiana Coleman before Ole Miss' Mandy McCalla scored in the 73rd minute to bring the score to 3-2.
The Rebels pressed for the remaining 17 minutes but were unable to tie the game.
Ole Miss ended the game with 13 shots (seven on goal) while Auburn recorded 14 (10 on goal). Souza recorded a team-high four shots for the Rebels. Ronaldi made seven saves in goal for the Rebels.
Ole Miss will host Alabama Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m.
