OXFORD, Miss. - Fans and students coming back to campus this week might have noticed a little more activity going on at Oxford-University Stadium/Swayze Field as the Ole Miss baseball team took to the field to begin skill work on Monday in preparation for the upcoming season.
The Rebels have been taking to the field in groups to get acclimated to the flow of practice and being back on the field after the end of fall ball last October. Players and coaches are allowed to do skill work in smaller units before taking the field for the first official day of practice on January 27.
So far, head coach Mike Bianco has been pleased with what he's seen from his squad.
"We've been doing skill work since Monday and it's been going great," Bianco said. "I'm really pleased with the shape the players returned to campus in after a long layoff. It's obvious they were working hard over the break on their own hitting and throwing and in the weight room.
"It's an opportunity to get back into the flow and utilize time a little better without classes going on,"
Bianco said. "That will change next week when classes resume and we really have to work the skill groups into a more condensed time. Right now is our chance to get the players back into shape before we start official practice."
In addition to skill work on the diamond, the Rebels have also hit the weights in the Starnes Athletic Training Center.
Ole Miss will open the 2012 season on the road, kicking off a three-game series at No. 9 TCU on February 17.
