OXFORD, Miss. -- Ole Miss freshman men's golfer Blake Morris has qualified to compete in the prestigious Jones Cup Invitational this weekend at the Ocean Forest Club in Sea Island, Ga.
The Jones Cup Invitational is considered the top pre-qualifier for the Walker Cup, the bi-annual match between the top United States and European amateur golfers. The tournament features many of the top amateur and collegiate golfers from around the world.
Morris finished third in the qualifying event, posting a 1-over 73 score to earn a spot in the tournament.
The Waterbury, Conn. native has gotten off to a solid start for the Rebels in his debut season. The true freshman played in four of five tournaments in the fall portion of the schedule, posting a 73.50 stroke average. Prior to arriving at Ole Miss, Morris had a successful career in the junior ranks, finishing in the top 50 in the AJGA Polo Golf Rankings and earning FCWT All-American honors.
"Blake has played well for us as a freshman," said Ole Miss head coach Ernest Ross. "By qualifying for this prestigious event, he will be competing against the best of the best--not only in the U.S., but also from Europe. This event serves as a proving ground for potential players on both the U.S. and European Walker Cup teams."
This will mark the second consecutive year that a Rebel has competed in the tournament. Former All-American Jonathan Randolph finished eighth in last year's tournament--five strokes behind eventual NCAA Individual Champion John Peterson of LSU.
Other previous Jones Cup winners include current PGA Tour members D.J. Trahan (2001), Nicholas Thompson (2005), and Kyle Stanley (2009).
