Bruning, Ladner Lead Rebels At Islander Classic

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas - The Ole Miss offense pounded out 10 hits, including home runs from Kendall Bruning and Londen Ladner, and Bruning allowed just five hits in the circle as the Rebels run-ruled Texas-San Antonio 12-2 in five innings in the first game of the Islander Classic hosted by Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Friday. The Rebels dropped game two, 7-4, to the host Islanders.
Sophomore RT Cantillo led the team with five hits and four runs scored on the day, while senior Corrine Doornberg added three hits and scored three runs and Ladner had a team-best six RBI. The Rebels (5-4) will face Texas Southern and Texas-San Antonio tomorrow beginning at 11 a.m. in the final day of the Islander Classic.
Game One
Senior Kendall Bruning hit her second home run of the season and struck out two in a complete-game victory, as Ole Miss run-ruled Texas-San Antonio 12-2 in five innings on Friday.
Ole Miss jumped on top of UTSA with four runs in the bottom of the first highlighted by a two-RBI double to right center from first baseman Londen Ladner and a two-run single up the middle from freshman Dallas Hardin.
In the bottom of the second, centerfielder RT Cantillo smashed double to the wall in center that scored Corrine Doornberg, and Lander followed with a two-run home run to straight-away center that put Ole Miss up 7-0. After an Allison Brown line out, Burning smashed a line-drive, solo homer to left center that gave Ole Miss an 8-0 lead after two.
The Roadrunners scratched a pair of runs across in the third, highlighted by an RBI single from catcher Megan Low that cut the Ole Miss to 8-2. However, the Rebels plated four more runs in the top of the fifth to take a 12-2 thanks to a bases-loaded passed ball, a Bruning sac fly, a Natalie Nimmo pinch-hit RBI double and a double steal of home by Nimmo.
Bruning (4-2) picked up the complete-game win after giving up two runs on five hits in five innings of work. She struck out two and walked three batters.
Ladner led the Rebels at the plate with two hits including her first homer of the season. She also scored twice and drove in a career-high four runs. Bruning went 1-for-2 at the plate with her second homer of the year and two RBI. Hardin also drove in a pair of runs and Cantillo tied a career-best with three hits and three runs scored.
Game Two
Sophomore RT Cantillo had two hits and two RBI and senior Corrine Doornberg added two singles and two runs scored, but it wasn't enough as the Rebels dropped the second game, 7-4, to host Texas A&M-Corpus Christi at Chapman Field on Friday.
Ole Miss took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first thanks to an RT Cantillo RBI single and a Londen Ladner RBI groundout. However, the Islanders scored three runs in the bottom of the frame highlighted by a two-run single from designated player Laura Phillips that put TAMU-Corpus Christi up 3-2 after the first frame.
Ladner tied the game at three in the third with her second RBI of the game on a sac fly to foul territory in right. The Islanders, however, added two more runs in the bottom of the inning on a two-RBI single from second baseman Sandy Schumann that put Corpus Christi up 5-3 after three.
The Islanders added two more runs in the fifth on a Schumann RBI double and a Cassie Redman RBI single, but Ole Miss answered back in the top of the sixth with an RBI double to left center by shortstop Allison Brown that cut the Rebel deficient to 7-4.
Erinn Jayjohn (0-2) started for Ole Miss and took the loss after allowing five runs on seven hits in three-plus innings of work. She struck out two and walked two. Kelly Chandler entered in relief in the fourth and pitched the final 3.0 innings allowing two runs on five hits, while striking out two.
