PONTE VEDRA, Fla. - Senior Joe David shot an even- par-72 to lead the Rebels to a seventh place position at the conclusion of the first day of play in the John Hayt Invitational Sunday afternoon.

As a team, the Rebels fired a 300 on the par-72 Sawgrass Country Club course and sit six strokes behind current leader No. 17 Central Florida. The Golden Knights hold a one-stroke lead over second place Tennessee.

Sang Yi of No. 23 LSU leads all individuals after carding a 5-under 67.

Sitting at 2-over, David's back-nine got off to a bad start with a double bogey. The Madison, Tenn., native quickly composed himself though, and fired an eagle and a birdie on the following two holes to get back into contention. A clutch birdie on the 18th pulled David back to even-par and in a tie for ninth.

Freshman Joe Lewis chipped in with a 3-over 75 opening round. Lewis struggled on the first six holes, but rebounded to shoot a 1-under the rest of the way.

"It was tough starting off in rain, cool temps and wind," head coach Ernest Ross said. "We played tough until the last four holes. We know we can play better."

Tom Brown added a 4-over 76, while Billy Brozovich shot a 5-over 77 to also remain in contention for a top-20 finish.
