OXFORD, Miss. - Three high school seniors have signed national letters of intent to join the Ole Miss track and field program, head coach Joe Walker announced on Monday.
Asia Cooper (Jackson, Miss.), Catie Daigre (Kingwood, Texas) and Hunter Harrison (Memphis, Tenn.) will join the Rebels for the 2012-13 academic year.
"We are excited to have signed all three of these athletes," Walker said. "We expect all of them to make an immediate impact on our program and are excited with the kind of character each of them exhibits. Each of them has a lot of potential to improve on what have already been stellar high school careers and they still have this season to go."
Asia Cooper is a senior at Murrah High School in Jackson and is the reigning 6A state champion in 100 meter dash. She led the Murrah girls to the 2011 6A state title as a team and also finished runner-up individually in the 200 and fourth place in the 400. She won all three races at the North 6A meet as a junior. She participated in the 200 meters at the 2010 USATF National Junior Olympics. She boasts personal bests of 11.82 in the 100, 24.74 in the 200 and 58.53 in the 400.
Catie Daigre is a three-time All-State cross country selection from Kingwood High School in Kingwood, Texas. As the top runner on her team, she has led Kingwood to two state championships and one runner-up finish. Her top 1,500-meter time is a sensational 4:52.08, while she has run a 4:58.08 in the 1,600 meters. She also boasts personal bests of 2:14.60 in the 800, 10:17.58 in the 3,000 and 11:11.70 in the 2-mile run.
Hunter Harrison won the Tennessee 3A state title in the discus with a school-record throw of 175-10 as a junior last year at Houston High School in Memphis. He also placed ninth in the shot put and was a finalist during his sophomore season. He has also thrown the javelin in summer track with a personal best of 162-10. As a sophomore, he placed fifth in the discus at the New Balance national championships and qualified for the meet as a junior, but did not participate. His personal best in the shot put is 49-10. He is the son of former Ole Miss thrower Don Harrison (also his high school coach), who still ranks second in the Rebels' record books in both shot put and discus. Hunter's sister, Jessie, is a junior thrower at Tennessee.
