OXFORD, Miss. - Led by first-year head coach Windy Thees, the Ole Miss softball team will open its 2012 season this weekend at the Seminole Classic hosted by Florida State. All games will take place at the Seminole Softball Complex at JoAnne Graf Field on the FSU campus.
The three-day tournament, which begins on Friday, features the Rebels, Stephen F. Austin, Tennessee Tech, and the host Seminoles. Ole Miss will open with Tennessee Tech at 9 a.m. on Friday before facing Florida State at 1:30 p.m. The Rebels will take on Stephen F. Austin at 9 a.m. on Saturday and seeded play will start Saturday afternoon with the championship round slated for Sunday.
"I am excited to go to Tallahassee and my old stomping grounds," said Thees, who was a four-year letterwinner for the Seminoles from 1993-97. "I think it is going to be a great time for our team to see what we are made of. We will face very different types of teams. There are power teams, speed teams and pitching and defensive teams at the tournament. I am excited to see how our kids respond."
Florida State, the defending ACC champion, is receiving votes in both preseason top-25 polls after posting a 32-28 record last year and advancing to the NCAA Tournament. Tennessee Tech posted a 22-26 mark a year ago, while Stephen F. Austin finished the season with a record of 14-36.
Ole Miss is 5-2 all time against Stephen F. Austin, 1-1 vs. Florida State and 1-2 all-time against Tennessee Tech.
