MADISON, Miss. -- In a closely contested battle, Ole Miss edged out Mississippi State for the second consecutive year to win the Egg Bowl Scramble here on a beautiful Tuesday afternoon at the Reunion Golf and Country Club, as part of the sponsorship media day for the BancorpSouth Intercollegiate to be held April 2-3.
In the Egg Bowl Scramble's second edition, the Rebels posted a score of 647.1 to the Bulldogs 648.7 to earn the right to hang onto the trophy. In addition, the Rebels received a $2,000 check to the golf program. Mississippi State received a $1,000 check.
In the event, players and coaches combined with BancorpSouth employees and customers to form four-member teams.
"We are very happy to have BancorpSouth return as our title sponsor," said Ole Miss head coach Ernest Ross. "They assist us in bringing big-time college golf to central Mississippi."
Joe Lewis fired a team-low round of 68.
"It was a very close competition today," said Ross. "The course was wet and played long, but Joe led us with a great round."
Earlier in the day, BancorpSouth and Ole Miss held a press conference to promote the upcoming BancorpSouth Intercollegiate, which will also take place at Reunion. The tournament features four Division I programs from the state of Mississippi in Ole Miss, Mississippi State, Southern Miss, and Jackson State.
"Reunion is in great shape," said Ross. "We look forward to the challenge."
