No. 17 Rebels Host Southern Miss Tuesday Night

THIS WEEK FOR OLE MISS:
Ole Miss kicks off week six of the 2012 season with a single midweek game at home against in-state rival Southern Miss on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. The Rebels will then continue Southeastern Conference play this weekend, traveling to Tuscaloosa for a three-game series against the Crimson Tide. Friday's contest is set for a 6:35 p.m. start, with Saturday slated to start at 2:05 p.m. and Sunday's game set for 1:05 p.m.

NEXT WEEK FOR THE REBELS:
Ole Miss will play four home games next week, beginning with a Tuesday night contest against Jackson State at 6:30 p.m. It marks the second time the Rebels will face Jackson State this season. Ole Miss will then play host to top-ranked Florida in a three-game series at Swayze Field. Friday night's contest is set for a 6:30 p.m. start with Saturday's start set for 1:30 p.m. and Sunday set for a 12:30 p.m. pitch.

PROBABLE PITCHING MATCH-UPS:

NOTING SMITH: Freshman right-hander Sam Smith is set to make his fifth start of the season - and sixth appearance - when he takes the mound against Southern Miss on Tuesday night. Smith is coming off his first loss of the season at the hands of No. 22 Louisville this past week and currently holds an overall record of 1-1 with a 4.05 ERA through 20.0 innings of work. In his time on the mound, Smith has posted 16 strikeouts to only three walks and has allowed nine runs on 22 hits. Opponents are hitting .275 against the freshman. Smith has made starts against Arkansas State, Memphis, UT-Martin and at Louisville to go along with a relief appearance in the season-opening win at No. 10 TCU.

A LOOK AT SOUTHERN MISS:
The Golden Eagles of Southern Miss enter Tuesday night's contest with an overall record of 11-9 and are coming off a series loss to Murray State in Hattiesburg this past weekend. Southern Miss won the Saturday game 9-7, but dropped the Friday and Sunday games 11-6 and 6-4. The Golden Eagles are led by Mason Robbins at the plate with a .444 average and he has also added two home runs and 15 RBI. Leading the team in power is Blake Brown with three home runs and 21 RBI. Sophomore RHP Boomer Scarborough takes the mound for the Golden Eagles, holding a 1-0 record with a 1.83 ERA through four starts. He has worked 19.2 innings, allowing six runs on 12 hits with 13 walks and 13 strikeouts in his time on the mound.

OLE MISS VS. SOUTHERN MISS:
Ole Miss and Southern Miss have met 112 times wth the Rebels holding a 70-42 lead in the all-time series. The two teams first met in 1916 with Ole Miss picking up a pair of wins 10-3 and 6-0.

LAST TIME OUT VS. SOUTHERN MISS:
Ole Miss and Southern Miss met twice in the 2011 season with the Rebels dropping both contests. Ole Miss fell 4-3 in 10 innings in Hattieburg before falling 8-6 in the neutral site contest played at Trustmark Park later in the season.

OLE MISS VS. NON-CONFERENCE FOES UNDER BIANCO:
Ole Miss has posted an impressive non-conference record over the course of the past nine seasons under head coach Mike Bianco. Since Bianco's arrival in Oxford in 2001, the Rebels have posted a 241-86-1 (.735 win percentage) mark in non-conference foes. Just a year ago, the Rebels were 17-8 in non-conference games, posting a .654 win percentage. This season, Ole Miss is 14-3 in non-conference games.

HIT STREAKS ON THE LINE:
Two Rebels hold hit streaks of more than one game heading into the midweek contest against Southern Miss on Tuesday night. Will Allen leads the team with an active streak of four games with a hit, while Matt Snyder is right behind him with a hit in the last two straight games.
