Rebel Homer Barrage Falls Short Versus No. 24 Auburn

OXFORD, Miss. - Sophomore center fielder RT Cantillo went 2-for-3 at the plate with an RBI triple and starting pitcher Erinn Jayjohn and senior Cali Overbeck both hit seventh inning home runs, but Ole Miss dropped Saturday afternoon's matchup with No. 24 Auburn 7-4 at the Ole Miss Softball Complex.
After being held scoreless for the first five innings, Cantillo got Ole Miss on the scoreboard in the bottom of the sixth with a two-out, RBI triple off the wall in left that brought home Brittany Broome and cut the Tiger lead to 4-1.
Jayjohn connected on her first homer of the season in the seventh - a solo shot down the left field line - that cut the Auburn lead to 7-2. After Amanda Hutcheson singled to right, Overbeck smashed a two-run homer to left that put Ole Miss down just 7-4. The long ball was Overbeck's fifth of the season and the 17th of her career. She finished the game 2-for-3 with two RBI and a run scored.
Auburn took a 2-0 lead in the top of the second on shortstop Lauren Guzman's two-out, two-run triple to right center. The Tigers extended their lead in the top of the on an RBI to right fielder from designated player Hilary Mavromat. An RBI single from third baseman Caitlin Schultze in the sixth put Auburn up 4-0 and second baseman Brooke Lathan hit a three-run home run to straight away center in the seventh to put the Tigers back on top 7-1.
Junior Erinn Jayjohn took the complete-game loss after giving up seven runs, six earned, on nine hits in 7.0 innings of work. She struck out three and issued one walk.
The Rebels and the Tigers will conclude their three-game set tomorrow at 1 p.m. at the Ole Miss Softball Complex.
