OXFORD, Miss. - Junior Erinn Jayjohn and senior Kendall Bruning limited the Bulldogs to just two hits over seven innings, but Ole Miss dropped a pitchers' duel 2-1 to Mississippi State on Saturday in front of a season-high crowd of 537 at the Ole Miss Softball Complex.
Center fielder RT Cantillo reached on a hit by pitch to start the bottom of the Ole Miss (16-23, 3-13 SE) first and Brittany Broome followed with a full-count walk to put runners on first and second. A passed ball by Bulldog catcher Kaili Smith allowed both runners moved into scoring position and first baseman Londen Ladner lifted a single to left that scored Cantillo, but MSU left fielder Jessica Cooley threw Broome out at the plate to end the Rebel threat.
MSU (24-19, 7-14 SEC) got on the scoreboard in the top of the fourth with two runs aided by an Ole Miss error. Smith led off the inning with a walk and stole second. Third baseman Sam Lehanan singled to left, but Brittany Broome misplayed the ball and allowed Smith to score and Lehanan to move to second. Lehanan would score later in the frame on sac fly to center by second baseman Heidi Shape to give the Bulldogs a 2-1 lead.
Jayjohn (3-9) started for the Rebels and gave up just two runs on two hits and struck out one in four innings of work. Bruning pitched the final three innings and did not give up a hit, while striking out three.
Ole Miss and Mississippi State will conclude their three-game series tomorrow at 1 p.m. at the Ole Miss Softball Complex. The game will be televised by Fox Sports South with Dave Baker and Cheri Kempf calling the action.
