OXFORD, Miss. - Some of the nation's best players will be here in Oxford this week as the Ole Miss women's tennis team hosts the 2012 SEC Championship April 19-22 at the Palmer/Salloum Tennis Center/Galtney Courts.
Thursday's first round features four matches with the winners advancing to face the top four seeds in Friday's quarterfinal action. The Rebels earned a first round bye as the No. 4 seed, and will face the winner of the No. 5 Vanderbilt/No. 12 Mississippi State match Friday at 3 p.m.
The Rebels (16-7, 8-3) enter the tournament on a five-match win streak. They defeated Vanderbilt 5-2 here and then last Saturday, shut out Mississippi State 7-0 in Starkville.
Senior Kristi Boxx leads Ole Miss with an impressive 15-5 record at No. 1 singles. She finished 9-1 in the SEC. Boxx, who hails from just down the road in Grenada, also teams with fellow senior Abby Guthrie for a 19-2 record at No. 1 doubles. They went 10-1 in the SEC.
Speaking of the freshmen, both have been contributors to the Rebels' success. Erin Stephens picked up her second SEC Freshman of the Week honor this week and finished 6-5 in the SEC, all in the top half of the lineup. Julia Jones posted an 8-3 league record and also earned SEC Freshman of the Week honors.
