OXFORD, Miss. - The No. 4 seeded Ole Miss women's tennis team learned its opponent in the SEC Quarterfinals Thursday, as fifth-seeded Vanderbilt defeated Mississippi State 4-0 in the first round setting up Friday's 3 p.m. match at the Palmer/Salloum Tennis Center.
The Commodores took the doubles point to go up 1-0. Mississippi State only had four available players, thus giving Vanderbilt a 3-0 lead before the first hit of the singles. The Commodores won the first set on courts one and four. Jackie Wu won the first set 6-1 against Alexandra Perper at No. 1, but then Perper retired giving Wu and Vanderbilt the 4-0 victory.
"We are excited about playing Vanderbilt for a chance to advance in the tournament," head coach Mark Beyers said. "They have a really good team, but so do we. We're looking forward to the match and playing at home in front of the fans."
In other first round action, sixth-seeded South Carolina began the day with a 5-0 win over 11th-seeded Kentucky. The Gamecocks meet third-seeded Georgia Friday at 9 a.m. In the only upset of the day, 10th-seeded Arkansas defeated seventh-seeded LSU 4-1 to set up a quarterfinal meeting against the No. 2 seed, Alabama at Noon Friday. In the nightcap, Tennessee won the doubles point and then held off a furious rally by Auburn to win 4-2. They will face the No. 1 seed, Florida Friday at 6 p.m.
