NEW ORLEANS - The Ole Miss Rebels (2-1) are in New Orleans today for their first road contest of the season against the Tulane Green Wave (0-2).
The Rebels are coming off a tough home loss to the Texas Longhorns, who are ranked No. 10 in the USA Today Coaches poll this week.
"We're excited about getting back on the field so we can get this taste out of our mouth," Ole Miss head coach Hugh Freeze said. "We're going to see if we can improve, clean up some of our mistakes and travel down to Tulane and get a win."
The Rebels bring to New Orleans their high-powered offense led by sophomore quarterback Bo Wallace. In three games, the offense has put up 108 points, which is the most in the first three games since the 2003 team that was directed by a familiar name at quarterback in Eli Manning.
Wallace has been responsible for 48 points thus far (six passing TDs, two rushing TDs), placing him tied for third in the SEC in scoring.
Ole Miss ranks second among SEC teams in total offense, averaging just over 500 yards per game, in part to the success of sophomore wide receiver Donte Moncrief. Moncrief, who leads the SEC in receiving yards per game (106.7), has been added to the Biletnikoff Award watch list, which recognizes the best wide receiver in college football every season.
On the defensive side of the ball, the Rebels will have a slightly new look against the Green Wave. Junior Charles Sawyer has moved from safety back to his original position at cornerback. Other personnel changes include freshman Quintavius Burdette from safety to corner and freshman Trae Elston into the projected starting lineup at free safety.
This will mark the 71st meeting between Tulane and Ole Miss, with the Rebels leading the series 42-28 and 26-25 in New Orleans. Ole Miss has won 10 consecutive meetings dating back to 1989.
Tulane has lost at home to Rutgers (24-12) and on the road at Tulsa (45-10) to start the season.
"I watched the Rutgers game and am very impressed with them, particularly defensively," said Freeze. "They held Rutgers to 150 yards rushing. You can tell that (Tulane coach Curtis Johnson) is very comfortable facing that type of offense coming from the NFL."
The Rebels hold a 129-52-2 record all-time against current members of Conference USA and a 54-15 record against non-conference opponents dating back to a 38-0 win over Tulane on Nov. 12, 1994.
