Rebels Fall To Auburn 1-0 Sunday

AUBURN, Ala. - The Rebels out-shot the Tigers on the day, including a 12-to-7 advantage in the second half, but a flurry of shots as part of a late rally yielded results for the home team as Ole Miss (9-4, 2-4 SEC) fell to Auburn (7-7, 3-3 SEC) by a score of 1-0 on Sunday.

The Rebels turned in 16 shots on the afternoon to 15 for the Tigers, and out-shot Auburn 12-to-7 in the second half, but it was the Tigers who got the golden goal to pick up the win.

"It was a disappointing loss today," said Ole Miss head coach Matt Mott. "We had chances to score and we didn't execute. Our effort was good, but when we had the chances we didn't take them. They got a good counter-attack goal and we couldn't respond after that."

The Rebels got the best scoring opportunity in the first half when Mandy McCalla turned at the top of the box and drilled one at the goal. The Auburn keeper made a nice save to keep the Rebels off the board. Despite being outshot 8-to-4 in the first half, the Rebel offense was efficient with all four shots on goal as Ole Miss put pressure on the Tigers with its opportunities.

The Rebels came out firing in the second half, possessing the ball and putting pressure on the Auburn defense early. Ole Miss held the ball in the Auburn half of the field for more than five minutes to open the frame before the Tigers would get a possession on the Rebel half of the field.

Ole Miss kept the pressure on the Tigers early, out-shooting Auburn 6-to-2 in the first 25 minutes of the second stanza. But it was a late Auburn surge that proved to be the Rebels' undoing.

The Tigers took the lead in the 76th minute when Tatiana Coleman took a pass from Maddie Barnes and sent it in to the near post from 15 yards out. It capped a flurry of shots for the Tigers over a five-minute span as Auburn pressed the Rebel defense until scoring on the Coleman shot.

Ole Miss was unable to mount a rally despite out-shooting the Tigers down the stretch and Auburn picked up the win.

The Rebels return to action next Friday at 7 p.m. when Ole Miss will host the Georgia Bulldogs at the Ole Miss Soccer Complex.
