Quartarone Paces Rebels Against No. 10 Memphis

OXFORD, Miss. - Junior Melissa Quartarone fired a season-best 593 in air rifle Monday, but it was not quite enough, as No. 11 ranked Ole Miss fell to No. 10 Memphis 4645-4609 at the Patricia C. Lamar National Guard Readiness Center.
Quartarone posted two perfect targets to finish one off her career-high of 594 set last year against Memphis. Her 593 is not only a season-best for her, but is the top score in air rifle for the Rebels' this season.
The Rebels shot a 2279 in smallbore, led by Quartarone's 578. Memphis finished with a 2310 on the heels of Daniel Hermsmeier's 584.
Ole Miss made up some ground in air rifle, but it was not enough to overcome the slow start in smallbore. Quartarone's 593 paced the Rebels to a 2330 total, just five behind the Tigers' 2335. Hermsmeier equaled Quartarone's 593, and Kelly Audet tallied a 587 to lead Memphis.
Despite the disappointment of dropping two top 10 matches at home this holiday weekend, head coach Valerie Boothe feels her team will rebound, they just need to put it all together at the same time.
"We really struggled today. We had some great individual performances with Melissa Quartarone, but we just couldn't make it happen as a team," Boothe said. "We know the tools are there. We just have to put the pieces together."
The Rebels will have to rebound quickly, as they get back in the range to prepare for matches on the road this weekend, while also beginning the second semester of school Tuesday. The team will head to West Point, N.Y. this weekend to face Jacksonville State Saturday and Army Sunday.
