WEST POINT, Miss. - Freshman Connor Davis fired a 2-under 70 and fellow frosh Forrest Gamble carded an even-par 72 in the second round of Old Waverly Collegiate Championship on Monday to help move Ole Miss into a tie for seventh place heading into tomorrow's final round.
The Rebels shot a 16-over par 304 in the first round on Monday morning, but bounced back in the afternoon to fire an even-par 288 aided by Davis and Gamble. An Olive Branch native, Davis carded four birdies in the second round en route to a 70 after firing a 6-over 78 in the morning round and is currently tied for 26th overall. Gamble turned in a 74 in the first round of the day and followed with an even-par round of 72 in the afternoon that included four birdies. He is currently tied for 16th heading into tomorrow's final round.
"After a poor start, we rebounded with a good round in the afternoon," said Ole Miss head coach Ernest Ross. "We had some guys really struggling with putting, and golf can be really frustrating if you miss a lot of short putts. I am proud of them for fighting back. Tomorrow gives us another chance to gain more confidence."
Sophomore Joe Lewis carded back-to-back round of 75 and 74 on Monday and is currently tied for 29th. Junior Tom Brown turned in a 6-over par 78 in the morning round, but battled back to fire an even-par 72 in the second round and is also tied for 29th. Sophomore Blake Morris shot a 78 in the opening round and a 76 in the afternoon to tie for 51st heading into the final round.
The third and final round of the Old Waverly Collegiate Championship tees off tomorrow morning at the Old Waverly Golf Course in West Point. All rounds are open to the public and admission is free.
